Central Library is an iconic community space and a one-of-a-kind venue with breathtaking artwork. While exploring the potential for different uses of library space, Kitchener Public Library had a novel idea. Opening the library after-hours would allow us to expand our private meeting room rentals to include special occasions like weddings, anniversary parties, corporate events and more. But operating the library as a venue for special events required a new approach.
Farida joined Kitchener Public Library as the Special Occasions Associate in 2021. Farida brought 10 years of professional experience as an event and wedding planner to her role at the library. Her industry knowledge has also brought a fresh perspective about how we think about animating library spaces.
In Farida’s two years at the library, the venue rental program has grown from Ceremonies in the Stacks, a 90-minute ceremony-only wedding package, to a full-scale venue. Each rental is different, which is part of why Farida loves doing special events.
“Celebrations look very different for different people. Working with clients on each event and helping them build it to reflect their needs is really rewarding,” said Farida. “There are no ‘standard packages’ to choose from so folks get to create events that reflect their personalities, style and values. I appreciate playing a role in their celebration.”
Whether it is a wedding or a film screening, a musical performance or a corporate event Farida helps ensure that each client has a successful event and ensures they have an incredible experience renting our spaces.
“Events are my super power. I get to use my talents and experience to give back to my own city – it’s perfect!” said Farida.
It has been an exciting opportunity to welcome our community into the library in a way they’ve never experienced before. It may seem a bit unconventional to rent the library, but clients appreciate knowing that their rental fees go back to the library. Venue rentals support our ability to be fines-free while still offering dynamic programs and services and that is a truly novel idea.
