Drop off a plant at Central Library on one of our designated drop-off days, and then return for the swap event, where you can pick up a new plant to take home!

Saturday, May 21 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
at Central Library (outdoors, on the Ahrens Street side of the library)

How to Participate

1. Pick 1 - 3 plants to swap.
2. Bring your plants to Central Library on designated drop-off days prior to the event (details below).
3. Come back on Saturday, May 21st between 10 am and 12 pm to pick up a plant.

Need help picking a plant to swap? Here are some things to consider:

  • Don't dig up a one-of-a-kind plant! If you are digging a plant up from your garden, choose a perennial that has been slowly spreading.
  • Seedlings that you started yourself are a great option.
  • Avoid plants that you cannot identify.
  • Avoid invasive or aggressive plants. Avoid plants that are considered "weeds".
  • When digging up a plant from your garden, remove it from the soil and shake off the excess. Ideally, plance the plant in a clean pot using bagged poitting soil. This will help to avoid the transfer of weeds, mites, and other problems.

Dropping off your plants:

  • Designated drop-off days: You can drop off your plants inside Central Library during open hours on Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20. Plants can also be dropped off at the plant swap event site located outside Central Library on Saturday, May 21 before 10:00 am.
  • Please bring no more than 3 plants to swap.
  • Bring as much information as possible to fill out the tag, e.g. plant name, growing habits, key care information. If you aren't sure about this, think about where in your yard the plant was growing.
  • If you are having problems identifying your plants, try an app or website like Pl@ntnet. Staff can help you with this.

On the day of the swap:

  • We will be able to take some plants on Saturday morning, but please bear in mind this may be a busy time.
  • The plant swap will take place at 10:00 am Saturday - no early bird swapping!
  • If you drop off 1 plant to the swap, you can take 1 plant. If you bring 3, you can take 3.
  • Selection will be first-come, first-served, and based on the honour system.

Are you new to gardening and have no plants to swap? If plants are left at the end of the swap, they will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
